Bad GCSE results and getting into Medicine

*WRITTEN IN JANUARY 2012 - POLICIES MAY HAVE CHANGED, ALWAYS CHECK*

One of the most common questions I get asked on my most popular post - GCSE requirements for Medicine - is "are my GCSE results good enough?"
So I thought I would write a post covering this area, so maybe I won't have to individually reassure quite as many people!

Universities that like GCSE's:
  • Oxford
  • Birmingham
  • UCL
  • Aberdeen (AS's do not form part of their academic requirements)
  • Edinburgh
  • Bristol
  • Manchester
  • Newcastle
Universities which think AS's are more important:
  • Cambridge
  • Brighton and Sussex (BSMS)
This list is from my personal knowledge, if I become aware of the preferences of more Universities I will post them on here!

People who shouldn't worry: Those with 10A*'s and above, whether you are from a state or independent school, these results are excellent.

People who shouldn't REALLY worry, but if they want to go to Oxbridge, London Unis, Edinburgh or Birmingham should: 6-9A*'s with the rest A's - these grades are GREAT, the the majority of medical schools will look upon them favourably. However the places listed are a bit more fussy, and you made need to up your game during your AS's if you wish to impress them.

People who need to check out the universities their applying to for policies on GCSE's: 4A* / 5A* with the rest A/B - you still have a good chunk of A*'s grades there, so don't worry too much, but do expect to have to have a little bit more work experience etc than your 10A* colleagues. Some Universities won't interview people without a certain number of A*'s at GSCE, so check policy (I'm thinking Birmingham and Newcastle).

People who need to apply to universities in which the UKCAT (or other admissions tests), work experience, extra-curricular activities and AS's and looked upon favourably: 3A*'s and under, with the rest A/B's - whilst you still have good grades, they really aren't up to par for what you need to get into medicine. You need to make up for this slight downer in your application with great work experience, volunteering, EC activities and of course a stellar personal statement with AAAA at AS to back you up.
DO NOT apply to universities which require higher GCSE's than this - it is stupid. They will not change their admissions policy, even if you have grade 8 in cello, are an Olympic rower and have been a carer for 2 years - the admissions policies are there to weed people out, and reduce the volume of applications they need to look over, and people that need interviewing.

Okay, hopefully this has answered many peoples worried questions, and I am sorry if you fall into the last category of this list.
My last nugget of advice is that preparation is the key - do everything early and do everything well.

Good luck with interviews (especially this time of year) and for anyone who has exams or resits.

  1. Would these grades be ok for GCSE:
    Maths - A/A*
English Language- B (Very slight chance of C)
    English Literature - A
    Biology- A*
    Chemistry- A*
    Physics-A
    ICT- A*
    Geography- A*
    French- A/B
    RE - A*

I also do work experience at an elderly home.

What universities ( if any) should I be looking to apply to?

  2. Hi, what about these;
    English Literature- B/A
    English Language- A
    Maths- A*
    Biology-A*
    Chemistry- A*
    Physics- A*
    Geography- A*
    Spanish- A*
    ICT(Short Course)- A*
    Photography- A/A*
    Design and Technology- A*,
My teachers have already predicted really strong results in AS and forward, I've also done EC and work experience.
Thanks as my parents are the most paranoid people ever! ;)

    1. Highest requirement is 6A* - Birmingham asks for 5 or 6 i think so this is much better.

      Delete
    2. Edinburgh asks for 6, but most people who get in have 8-11 A*'s (this is stated on their admissions website).
For Oxford most successful applicants have 70% A*s - meaning 7-9 depending on how many GCSE's you took.
Birmingham asks for 7, but people who actually get interviews have 8/9.
I cannot be bothered to look at all the other "GCSE" unis, but yes 9 should leave you in good stead.

  3. Hi, i didn't do exceptionally well at GCSE...
    A* - English lang
    A - english lit
B - maths (i took physics AS and am predicted A, will that prove i can do maths?)
    A - geography
    A - physics
    A - biology
    A - chemistry
    B - German
    A- Design & technology

I'm intending to go into the application process with very large amounts of work experience in every area i possibly can (as you can see i'll need it!), i do a lot of sport and have voluntarily coached swimming for a couple of years. I'll also be doing as much extra curricular activity as possible, DofE etc. If i achieve at least the AAAA at AS and AAA predicted A2, am i still in with a good chance?
i realise getting into one of the more competitive universities is a no go, where would you recommend applying?
    Thanks :)

By the way i took chemistry physics biology and politics at AS and am likely to drop politics for A2, or keep it on out of personal interest.

    1. To start off I would drop Politics unless you can DEFINITELY get an A in it.
Universities will most likely give you an offer for all four A-Levels.
Hmm look around at different Unis admission policies to see which ones you fit the criteria for (see http://youngwannabedoctor.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/gcse-results-and-university.html) and then see which ones place a lot of emphasis on extracurriculars and less on GCSE performance.

    2. Had a quick look for you, Brighton and Sussex look like a good bet. Southampton is essentially based on your PS, and I'm guessing yours would be pretty good with all your extracurriculars.
Let me know where you decide :)

  4. This is Feb 1st Anonymous person. Thanks! These are my predicted grades, so I will try my very best to improve the ones with an A and B. I see that you mentioned people who fall into this category will have to have more work experience and do more extra curricular activities compared to the higher group. Currently, I do voluntary work 2 hours a week at an elderly home and play piano at home ( no tutor). Would this be enough. Furthermore, I was hoping to apply to Hull or Manchester Uni- would these results be good enough? If not, which university would be the best I could possibly apply for?

    1. I got an interview at Hull with AS grades of AABB, and A in extended project. Predicted 4 A's at A level (Biology, Chemistry, English Literature and Drama-which is only for fun). I did 2hrs a week at old people's home and 2 days in a hospital and that's it. Depending on how good your personal statement is, Hull would be a good place to apply - plus they have excellent facilities, a great atmosphere and a great 'spiral' PBL course. I also only got 2 A* and 8A's at GCSE.

      Delete
    2. I would check out the Hull and Manchester admissions policies, and then go on application threads on forums such as "the student room" or "new media medicine", and see what the applicant profiles are for people who actually get offers. Good luck!

  6. Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I realise you put that your revision technique is doing posters. Would you say that just reading or learning from the text book isn't good enough. And sorry if you have repeated this but is there any other good way that information stores in your memory for longer?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would say that reading or learning from a textbook is a good base technique, but when you get to University (and beyond) and need to learn at a "deeper" level, and this is where the posters. They allow you to link information together from all different parts of a subject, and how it all works together, instead of just rote learning.
However for A-Levels and GCSE's rote learning is fine :)
Going over information at least 3 times should help you remember it longer, also APPLICATION means information is used in a practical way, and you're more likely to remember (i.e. doing exam questions, solving problems - all application).
Apparently revision from 2 weeks before is what you're most likely to remember in an exam, but I don't know, cramming always worked for me ;)

    2. I learn by reading the textbook and answering exam papers and get A's and A* at AS and now A level.

      Delete
    3. Yes I agree, exam papers are very helpful at GCSE and A-Level

  7. Hello, Please Refer to me as Monkey Man to make it clear...

    GCSE:
    Chemistry A*
    Biology A*
    Physics A*
    Maths A*
    Statistics A*
    History A*
    Business A*
    Physical Education A*
    English Language A*
    English Literature B

Overall I should hopefully get 9 A*s and 1 B, and I am quite worried that this single B will prevent me in getting into Oxbridge or other top medical colleges. Am I being too paranoid?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Monkey Man = While those are exceptional grades, they could hinder you slightly for Oxford. They base their whole admission policy on number of A*'s and the BMAT. Your competition will be people with 10+ A*'s.
What sort of school are you from? If it's not a great school that could help you.
I would encourage you to apply to Birmingham, Newcastle and Bristol (if you meet their other admission criteria), your grades will help you greatly with those places.
If you have an exceptional BMAT (you won't find out until after you've applied) then it could make up for your B, but Oxford doesn't give out many interviews.
      So I guess it's a gamble!
If you really really want to go, then apply, but be mentally prepared for a rejection.
In terms of Imperial and UCL (which I guess are other top schools?) They too are focused heavily on BMAT and of course you don't know what you got on that til late November! Very frustrating
Hmmm, I think if the rest of your application is water-tight (great PS, varied work experience/volunteering which you can talk about, high UKCAT, good references etc) then go for it. But apply to at least one place which you should definitely get an interview with.

  8. Hi thanks, for the great response,
I go to a normal school (state school?) - its not a grammar nor an independent private school. But tbh it is quite a good comprehensive at GCSE compared to others in my area...

    1) I have applied to lots of summer schools, the ones that im old enough to apply to. Im going to apply to UNIQ next year too...
I am sure I'll get experience with my GP and placements at hospitals; including Great Ormand St Hospital, for a lengthy period in the summer as I know a doctor there.
I am also going to begin volunteering with St Johns Ambulance for First Aid soon, but im worried that this mightn't be enough and perhaps I need more to compensate for the potential B in Literature.
What else do you recommend I do??

2)Also it may not be relevant but since Oxbridge are so competitive within sports, will it be helpful that I have represented Essex County Cricket for all age groups since age 11, and may be able to play within an Under 19 team (basically semi pro - wages etc) with a different, lesser county like Suffolk. Will this be helpful to get in to Oxbridge?

    3) BMAT/UKCAT seem to be vital, whats the best way to ensure success? Tutoring, Past papers, books?

    4) Finaly, I'm taking Bio, Chem, Maths and Econ at A levels and should get into King Edwards Grammar School for Sixth Form. This is the 5th best school in the country inc. Private Schools. Will this enhance my application at all?

    Much Appreciated, Monkey Man

    1. 1) UNIQ summer school is excellent, I went to it back in 2010 and it was a great experience. I think that sounds like lots! Variation is the key, if you really want some more I would recommend more volunteering, perhaps with children with disabilities or in an elderly peoples home?

2)Hmm I think unless you are of such a standard that you can get a sports scholarship (I don't know if they do those for cricket) then it won't be much of a help, except for really making your personal statement stand out.

      3) I think past papers and books are important, but mostly practice with any resources you can find. You need to get used to the format of the questions and the syllabus is pretty clear once you start revising.

      4) The reputation of your school won't really aid your application, unless it has an exceptionally BAD reputation in which case your GCSE's look better, but yours is the opposite. But don't worry about it, admissions people won't do background checks on your school bar possibly private vs. state.
Make sure you can get 4A's, because they will give you an offer based on all 4 A-Levels, should you choose to carry them all on past AS.

      Good luck !

  9. I recieved 2 interviews with grades of 2A* - in Biology and Fashion Textiles and 8A's. I applied to BSMS, UEA, HYMS and Southampton. I was told my UKCAT score let me down, don't worry about GCSE grades, half of them don't even look at them. At a recent conference at Cambridge they admitted they prefer improvement from GCSE to AS than excellent GCSE's and 'ok' AS levels. It is required at most uni's to get A's in English Language, maths and science.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I agree in terms of Cambridge, they look for "improvement" and give out more interviews than Oxford, meaning you have more chance to shine if your grades let you down.
However I don't agree that half of Universities don't look at GCSE grades at all, they are an important part of the application, and soon will be even more important when AS's are abolished, and GCSE's have to all be taken at one sitting (because then GCSE's will be a greater indicate of academic ability).
Good luck with the rest of your application!

  10. What Uni should I apply for?
    English Lang-B
    English Lit-A
    Maths-A*

    Business Studies-A

    1. If I was you I would be looking into GP surgeries, Myton Hospice especially if you want to go into Oncology...
pharmacies as well although they do not tend to allow young people any more. I don't know if this is true, but people were telling me that there are opportunities in universities, too, such as science labs and certain departments. Hope I helped. :)

    2. Anything you can get! Variation is what important.
Hospital shadowing looks good, but is hard to get. Try and shadow a GP in your local area, you probably own't be allowed at your own GP surgery, but ask around (contact the "practice manager").
Volunteering is excellent. St Johns ambulance, working with vulnerable adults or children, and any volunteering in hospitals will be looked upon favourably.
Try and make your volunteering placements vaguely healthcare related.

The most important thing is that you can reflect on them on your personal statement and in interviews.

      Good luck!

  12. I really want to get into Imperial College as it has been my dream.
    My GCSE predictions are:
    English Language: A
    English Literature: A/A*
    Maths: A/A*
    French: A/A*
    Geography: B/A
    History: B/A
Biology: B "slight chance of an A"
    Chemistry: A/A*
    Physics: A/A*
    RE: A/A*
German: A* achieved in Year 10

Imperial College states that their minimum requirement is AAABB including English, Maths and the Sciences. However, I fear that there will be applicants with much higher results than mine and also Imperial is quite competitive, too. Do I have a chance of getting in?
Also, I am considering to take Chemistry, Biology, Maths and German for my A-Levels. As an enrichment I would take the Extended Project, but is it better to do an enrichment or instead have a go at another A-Level, which in my case would be Psychology? Equally, I am stuck between two Sixth Forms: one which offers a medical society, is a religious school and has great results, too. Another Sixth form has the best results in the city, outstanding facilities, but doesn't offer a medical society. Which one would you go to? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
    Thank you...
P.S: I know I have a lot of questions, but please help me :)

    1. You need to work hard and get a definite A* not A\A* So, based on here you might get 6 A*, that should be okay

      Delete
    2. I'm going to be very honest with you, Imperial attracts THE BEST applicants, many will also be applying to Oxbridge. I'm not sure if your GCSE's will be good enough, your BMAT would have to be outstanding, but obviously you won't know until you've applied :/
If you really want to go, I would work hard and try to get more A*'s in your GCSE's.
I wouldn't do another A-Level, it just means they'll give you an AAAA offer instead of AAA. The extended project can be good to write about on your personal statement.
I don't really think a medical society is vital, just go to whichever you like the most :)
      Good luck!

  14. 8th+20th = I'm sorry I need way more information than what you've provided to just TELL you which Universities to apply to, you can do the research yourself when you have AS's, experience and everything else. This is supposed to just be a general guideline, I don't in fact know all universities medicine policies inside out.
For some generic advice, NOT Oxbirdge, London Unis, Birmingham, Edinburgh and probably Bristol and Newcastle as well.

  15. Hi can you please tell me what universities, I should be looking at with these GCSE's
    English Lang B/A
    English Lit B/A
    Chemistry A*
    Biology A*
    Physics A*
    Maths A*
    Stats A*
    Product Design A
    ICT B/A
    French B/A
    Sports science C

Product Design I did in a year, in year 10. And Sports science I did in year 9 and 10. But there was around a 10%-20% pass rate in sports science. And my French was affected because my tecaher left in early year 10, and we were left with a teacher who could not do much teaching and left in the summer of that year.

During my GCSE's there have been many changes to my school from a new head teacher. These changes have taken my school from 6th in the league tables to 15th in two years! And there have been 10 days of teachers strikes, beacuse of the changes!

Would medical schools understand the situation with my school and how its affected me, or would they think there just excusese?

    Thank You!

    1. I strongly doubt that Universities will take those circumstances into consideration - people normally need to have had much worse situations, such as illness, a family death, or severe home life disruption for it to be considered mitigating circumstances.
If you really think it has affected you, maybe put it on your personal statement, but honestly I wouldn't bother.

Research different Universities. GCSE's are only one of the criteria in the admissions process; Unis also look at admissions tests, AS's, personal statement, work experience and extracurricular activities.
      Start preparing now;
      - Get a varied amount of work experience or volunteering in different environments, such as an elderly peoples home, school, hospital, palliative care centre.
      - Read health news and keep up to date
      - prepare for the UKCAT for at least 2 months (I wouldn't recommend you apply to any BMAT unis)
      - Write your PS in the summer between AS and A2 and gets lots of advice from people
      - RESEARCH University policy to match your profile

      Good luck!

  16. I'm currently preparing for my GCSE's and I'm predicted 11 A*. I have got places for two sixth forms but i'm very confused about which one to go for. One of them is a grammer school(HBS) whereas the other is a private school(CLSG). Both have very good academic results but as I want to study medicine in the future I was wondering whether the type of sixth form I attend would affect my application? I will be studying maths, further maths, biology, chemistry and physics for my A-levels. Do you think going to a private school would make it harder for me to get into medicine? What type of school would you go for? grammer or private?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would probably go to the school where I think I could get the best grades and/or opportunities
If you think you will have better teaching and advice on your application at private school, then go there, getting in is important!
But, if you think support will be similar at both schools, then I would go for the grammar school. Cheaper for your parents, nicer people (I am prejudice) and your application will have to be STELLAR if you go to private school - unis have slightly higher expectations.

      Good luck!

      Delete
    2. Thank you for you reply :) I think I'm going to go with the grammer school. I was just wondering of what types of work experience I could do to enhance my application? I have already worked in two gp surgeries and one charity for disabled children. What else could I do?

      Delete
    3. That is already pretty impressive, make sure you keep a "volunteering" diary so that you can reflect on yours experiences for interviews etc.
Try volunteering / shadowing in a large hospital? There are many charities operating in hospitals that you can get involved with, and explore NHS websites to see if there are any work experience schemes.
Volunteering with the elderly could be another, we have an ageing population and it looks good in interviews.
Variety is the key, just have fun with it!

  17. Hey, I am doing my first year of the International Baccaulaureate at the moment.. Currently my progress is around 6's in Maths, Enlgish, Chemistry, Economics and Turkish, and a 7 in biology... My total points at the mooment are around 37...the grade ranges are 1-7, 1 the worst and 7 the highest grade.. however, my GCSEs were really bad.. I am from Germany, I have joined my current school in year 10 and english was a new language to me so I could not do my best.. I had:
    A* Turkish
    A* German
A English as a second language
    A Arts
    B Maths
    D Biology (after the resit I had a C)
    D Chemistry (after resit I had a C)
    E Physics (D after resit)
    E Geography

I want to apply to Cardiff University in 2013 for medicine but I am really worried.. I have considered resitting all 3 sciences again but I thought now it would be too difficult as I need to put in hell lot of effort in the IB, and also my teachers told me that Universities consider the initial grade, they don't consider the grades I had after the resits.. If I don't get into medicine then I want to do a 3yr biochemistry course first, and then a 4yr graduate medicine course in Cardiff... Its going to be 7 years in total..the cost does not worry me but its too long, so is there any other idea you could give me about which university i could get in..btw as part of the IB diploma course, I am doing lots of service work such as working for the british red cross, marie curie, helping in the Junior school.. I also have 2 medicine related work experiences and I want to do more work experiences over summer... please help, what can I do to get into cardiff without the biochemistry course or what uni can i apply to next year?? also, apart from UKCAT and the PS, what else is imp for university applications for medicine? and for the PS, what makes a PS different from others? I mean I could write about me having seen how medicine and hospitals are in differnt part of the world because I have lived in Dubai for 2 yrs, Germany for 9 yrs, Pakistan for 3yrs and he UK now 4yrs.. also because of my multicultural inheritance I speak German, Turkish, Urdu, Arabic and English fluently... is this an important point to include in a PS and if yes, what else can I include?? Thanks alot :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes if I was you I would mention the multicultural aspects of your life. However, it is also important to include in your PS why you got "bad" GCSE grades. I am in a similar situation to you as I moved to Germany in Year 9 and therefore English is my second language, too. However, I am only in Year 11. You have to make sure that the university knows why your grades are a bit low. Leicester University looks quite OK to me, but it says you need a minimum of a C grade in Double Award Science, Maths and English. Also, you could apply to Brighton and Sussex as their English Language GCSE requirement for people that have English as a second language is a C. Additionally, the AAA offer has an IB score of 36 and clearly you have a 37, which is above their requirement. Similarly, get your Science teachers to write the university a letter explaining your situation and your grades, because my Biology teacher said that she is willing to write me one for my Science grades on my behalf. Sorry I can't help you with the personal statement as I don't have any experience about that. Hope I even helped you a little. Good Luck :)

    2. Hello,
I would be very surprised if you could get in without C grades in the sciences, I would be surprised if you could even get onto a Biomed course, I'm sorry I realise this isn't what you want to hear.

Yes graduate medicine is an expensive route. Recent funding changes may mean these degrees are no longer, meaning fees would have to paid upfront.

Seeing as you speak so many languages, are there any medical schools in these countries which are GMC accredited?

    3. hi, i know my GCSEs r not good but is it tha impossible? :( i mean i am doing great this year and i am looking forward to achieve 6s (A grade).. will this years achievements not be considered for medicine, or any biomedical course at all?

    4. and btw i am considering cardiff university.. i know cardiff wants A*s and As in GCSEs for medicine.. and the biochemistry course asks for a minimum of B in english and C in maths GCSEs.. it does not specify the sciences.... what other possible is there? because i really want to do medicine :( please help!!

      Delete
    5. It is not impossible but it is going to be very hard.
GCSE's are one of the admissions tools used by Universities to separate applicants - not having achieved C's in science will mean your application is instantly thrown in the bin. It means they can very easily get rid of you, and not even worry about having to read your personal statement etc.
Cardiff wants 18 points at HL, which I've been told means you need to get a 7 in one subject? You are not on track for this.
The only route I can see, is applying for Universities with lower entry requirements - which would allow you to get into a Biomed degree with D's at GCSE. The applying for graduate medicine.
You would have to ENSURE you worked hard enough for a 2.1 in your degree, and got plenty of work experience and volunteering in.
If you really want to live in Cardiff, you could apply to the other Universities there - for example this one: http://www3.uwic.ac.uk/English/StudyAtUWIC/Courses/Cardiff-School-of-Health-Sciences/Pages/Biomedical-Science-BSc-Hons.aspx

    9. Dentistry is possibly more competitive than medicine, it requires a high level of manual dexterity and the interview panel would probably ask for an art portfolio. Dentistry also has similar entrance requirements to medicine.
Yes I would recommend resitting your GCSE's.

  18. Hi, I would really like to get into medical school. Could you please give me an indication of Where, if at all I should apply and how I would have to do at AS?

Maths A* gained in year 10
Biology A* but subject to moderation
History A Gained in year 10

    Predictions
    Chemistry: A/A*
    Physics: A/A*
    Geography: A/A*
German: B Slight chance of an A depending on moderation
    Electronics A/A*
    English Lit B/A/A*
    English Language A/B
    Latin B/A/A*
AO Maths A/B (Max grade is an A)

My Latin is quite volatile as I have had to do it after school once or twice a week since year 8 and really could come out as anything.

I am choosing to do Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Latin next year I will hopefully do as well as I can.

I would really like to do medicine. I do quite a lot of ECs but have no relevant experience at the moment. Thanks :)

    1. In terms of your AS's, I wouldn't bother doing Further Maths unless you're really passionate about it. Many Universities don't consider Maths and Further Maths as separate subjects, so you would be giving yourself unnecessary extra work, without it being considered an extra subject.

If you get the higher grades in your predictions, you would be looking at a good set of GCSE's. However some Universities don't like it if you have taken GCSE's early, so you need to check individual policy on this (it's normally the more prestigious unis.

In terms of which Unis, if you get any B's forgot about Oxbridge, London Unis, Birmingham and Edinburgh.
Otherwise, you need to see what your work experience and AS's look like.

RESEARCH individual policy to find a University that matches your profile

      Good luck!

  19. Hi,
I'm in year 10 but here are my predicted grades:
    Biology A*
    Chemistry A*
    Physics A*
    English Language A*
    English Literature A*
    Geography A
    History A
    French A
    Art B/C
Maths B/A (Got a C in unit 1 and B in unit 2 but I'm doing a resit for 1 so hopefully I can bring it up to A because I got that in the mock)
I haven't done all my exams so they could go either way but would I get in on those grades?
Also I've been volunteering for St John Ambulance for about 1 1/2 years now. Would that help?
    Thank you!

  20. Hi, I'm in year 11 and becoming a doctor is my dream.
I am predicted all A*'s for GCSE but I think that is unlikely and I am most likely to get:
    Maths Methods: A*
Maths Applications: A (Chance of A*)
    English Literature: A
    English Language: A
    Chemistry: A
    Biology: A
    Physics: A
    Spanish: A*
    Geography: A*
    History: A*
    Product Design: A
    Religious Education: A*

Do I stand any chance of getting in on these, and if so, where should I apply? Do you also have any other advice which could help me? Thank you :)

  21. Hello, I'm just doing my GCSEs at the moment. And like the rest of the people above I'm kind of paranoid about whether I'll get into med school or not. My dream is Cardiff, so an answer based upon what they want would be fantastic! Here are my predicted grades (though some I have already attained):
    English Language A* (definite)
    English Literature A*
    History A*
    Triple Biology A* (definite)
    Triple Chemistry A*
    Triple Physics A/A*
    Maths B/A
    Business A*
    RE A*
At A level I'm doing Chemistry, Biology, English Literature and Psychology: (All to A2 level). I should get A's at least in those. I'm also planning on doing a lot of work experience: -primary school -nursing home -hospice -hospital -doctor's surgery -a lourdes trip with people with disabilities.
What do you think? Is this acceptable to get into Cardiff or just a maybe? Please give me any advice or information you can. Thank you so much!

    2. Hello,
sorry I'm not that certain on Cardiff, but I do know that GCSEs are not priority for them as they are not one of the universitities that look at GCSEs that much. Also, please make sure you do not end up getting a B in Maths as all of your other grades seem fabulous and Maths is one of the hardest GCSES according to the universities and therefore they would also prefer you to have an A. Your A-Level subjects seem very good as you have an essay-writing subject and the two sciences, but maybe instead of the English Lit you could do Maths or a Language? Because you are already doing an essay-writing subject, which is Psychology. However, that is up to you.
To be completely honest with you I believe that you are a very good candidate and I wish you the best of luck becoming a doctor.
PS: I'm sorry if I have said something wrong as I do not know that much about Cardiff. This is only based on research and books that I have found.

Also, I'm hoping to get a few A*s at A level so I'm hoping that should also be impressive to them. Also thank you, your advice helped and reassured me a lot! :)

  25. Just keep in mind that GCSEs are only a minor factor compared to everything else e.g. AS-Level, personal statement and I am sure that Cambridge would prefer you to do better in A-Levels than in GCSEs, so don't worry too much.

    Chemistry: A
    Physics: A

  27. Hi...I would love to pursue a career in medicine in the future but at the moment I am very confused about my a-level subject choices. I'm currently in year 11 and I have chosen to do biology, chemistry, physics, maths and further maths. I'm confused about choosing to do further maths. Will it be worth it? I do currently really enjoy maths and have already obtained an A* in gcse maths. However, I was wondering whether doing further maths would actually benefit my application to medicine? I know its not needed but will it make my application stronger if i am able to do well in it? Also, i'm not entirely sure how the further maths+maths a-level works...do u complete the whole of the maths a-level in the first year and then do further maths in the second year? I know it is better to do 4 a-levels and do better in them but if i am able to do further maths as an additional subject will it be benefical for me?

  28. I am not completely sure, but for A level I don't think it is a good idea to do further maths, just maths would be fine. Psychology is a good subject to go for. And if you want to do medicine chemistry is definitely essential for A level ( not sure about biology) but it would put you in a better position if you did both of these. Physics is not vital but again may look better in your application ( these are traditional subjects). However, if you're already doing maths then it is not necessary. It really depends how well you perform in those subjects, use your GCSE grades as an indication, as if you didn't score well at GCSE, most likely you won't do well at A-level, as it is much, much harder than GCSE.

I thought doing further maths would be easier for because it would all kind of link in and help me with physics. Well,I have already got an A* in my maths gcse but i know the a-level maths will be alot more challenging. I'm still really confused but I'm certainly doing biology, chemistry, physics and maths. I just wanted to pick a 5th option to make my application stronger, but I think I would only do it for AS as it would be hard to continue all 5 on to A2. So if i do pick further maths/phycology I would only do it for AS...

  30. Does any university take into account exceptional circumstances for a candidate? In my case, I moved to England when I was 13 and have been learning English for the past 3 years. Now I am at the final stage of my GCSEs and still think that my predicted grades have to do with me moving to England late, but I do not know if universities take this into account. I am hoping to study medicine despite only being predicted 2 A*s, mostly As and a couple of Bs. Looking at the rejections of certain applicants, I am starting to loose hope of gaining a space at any medical school. Are medical schools keen on the fact that students may have circumstances? Also, if yes, how would a medical applicant make that clear to a university?
I hope to hear from anyone who offers help soon.

    Maths - A
    Biology - B
    Chemistry - A
    Physics - B
    Core Science - B
    English Literature - C
    English Language - B
    R.E - B
    ICT - B
    Geography - C/B
    French - C
    Health & Social Care - A*A*
    Astronomy - C/B
I also did my work experience in a Elderly Care Home in year 10 although, it has been demolished now; will this contribute to my CV? And , during the summer holidays should I do some volunteering work or just a normal path-time job or try a summer activity that is offered for 5 weeks for year 11's? so confused! Thankyou so much.

It just means that it is harder to get in.She will have to get excellent A level grades and score well on the medical admissions test and she will need good work experience. Also, she should avoid applying to Oxbridge or the Russell group. Hope I have helped.

  33. Hi, I'm Sabina and i i'm aspiring to be a medical student and the later be a Gynecologist.
I have not got the best GCSE results but here they are:
    Core science: C
    Maths: C
    Drama: B (maybe A)
    Additional Science: A*
English Lit: A* (slight chance of A)
    English Lang: A* (maybe A)
    Ethics and Philosophy: A*
    Sociology: A*
    Textiles: A*
    ICT: 3 Distinctions (equivelent to 3 A/A*'s)

    So overall i could get 9 A*'s, 1 B and 2 C's.

It's obviosly not the best but i am predicted AAAA in AS and teachers think it's likely i'll get A*A*A in A2. I am taking Biology, Chemistry, Phsycology and Sociology, and maybe going to drop Sociology after the first year.

I am also going to start Duke of Edingburgh, do it up to the Silver award, and this summer and so on i am going to get work experience of GP Shadowing, hospital work, charity shop work, youth centre, working with disability, the elderly, hospices and pharmcies.

    1. What other work experience could i get?
    2. What extra curricular activities can i do in and out of school?
    3. Thruthfully, do i still have the chance to get in to medical school, such a leicester? with the GCSE's, A levels, voluntary and experience? If not what else can increase my chances?

    1. The thing is even though you may think that your chances are low, there is still hope and therefore if I was u I would apply but also have a back-up plan such as biomedical or something similar. Also, the fact that you have 3 a*s is good, but the amount of bs you have may hold you back unless you turn those bs into as. also, work extremely hard for your a-levels and get good work experience sorted out, which will benefit you the most. Equally, if I was u I would apply to universities that are not that keen on GCSE results such as Brighton and Sussex and Leicester. Good luck! :)

  37. Did anyone here take Geography for GCSE? If you did, then how did you revise and manage to learn all your case studies. Also, how do you structure the 8 mark questions ( usually on case studies)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I took Geography for GCSE. What I did was summarized all the key points of the case study and then wrote down as many as I could remember. Most papers ask questions like Explain how.... Describe how... You could structure your 8 mark questions by starting of by saying..
On (date) in (location) they have done/this happened.. then you write about it. For example, I had a question asking about how a country had dealt with their high population growth rates. I started of with describing like this:

They have implemented a successful strategy in Kerela, India in which the goverment encourages people to have fewer children. (Then I explained how with points) By giving people awards such as early retirement and household benefits if they had fewer children.
That had already gained me 2 marks. So you need to make 4 explanations and discriptions on the case study, 1 point for description and 1 for the explanation.

      Good luck!

    2. It's not impossible, but it is going to be hard. I would avoid the Russell group universities and the C in Biology could possibly hinder the application to most universities. There are a lot of universities that expect A and B passes at English and Maths such as Nottingham, which wants 6 As in the core subjects and Imperial, which wants AAABB in the core subjects. You do have to realise that there will be 1000s of candidates with the same grades as you and possibly even higher than yours. Equally, avoid the universities that use tarrif points. I believe, Barts is one of those that use UCAS points for their interview and also Leicester uses tariff points out of 30. Excel at your medical admissions test. Apply to universities that seem to like less academics, but more of extra curricular things. Good luck!

I agree with the person above, it's going to be very hard.
Thousands of people will have much better grades than you, and more. Those with similar grades probably have extenuating circumstances.
Apply to Unis with less emphasis on GCSE's and try and make the rest of your application stellar.
But please be prepared for rejection!

    1. Well, you have done 8 GCSEs of which 4 of them are at A-grades. You'll have to look at the admissions criteria and avoid some universities even though your case has extenuating circumstances. Unis are not going to change their criteria for you, their entry requirements are there to get rid of GCSEs below their minimum, therefore I wouldn't bother applying to those universities. However, since you are predicted A*s at A-Level, which is even harder to get than at GCSEs I believe you should still be able to get in. If you are thinking of applying to Oxbridge I would apply to Cambridge as they seem to like the percentages at AS-Level, wheras Oxford seems to be all about number of A*s at GCSEs. Also, don't apply to Barts, Leicester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Imperial, UCL and Kings College as these have either specific GCSE criteria to be met or have a points system. However, Kings College interviews the top 700 people from their medical admissions test and therefore that university may be worthwhile. Good luck!

    1. Ah having C's in core science will hinder your application a lot, you may have to seriously consider the fact you will probably not get into medicine with these grades, and may have to enter via a graduate route.
Check out my post on GCSE requirements - http://youngwannabedoctor.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/gcse-results-and-university.html
Look to see if there are any Unis accepting C's in science and maths, and then check out their websites to see if you fit the rest of their admission policy.

      Delete
  43. With rest do you mean Additional Science? Also, the fact that you have gained a C grade in Maths means that the universities you can apply to are limited e.g. Imperial wants AAABB including Maths and English and there are only a few universities that will be OK with a C in Maths and you should realise that the competition is intense; there will be people with A*s at Maths and I assume you are in Year 13 since you have mentioned the personal statement? Why don't you consider something else, too such as pharmacology or biomedical sciences. I'm not saying you won't get in but the chances are low. Good luck!

    1. Do avoid the Russell group universities and consider universities such as Manchester or Brighton and Sussex and check out individual entry requirements, but do realise that those are the minimum that unis expect. 2. There is a lot more to medicine applications than just GCSE's. Once you have assessed all of your application (UKCAT score, interview abilities, range of work experience, AS grades etc) then you will have a better picture of what Universities you should apply to.
Some places have less emphasis on GCSE grades and more on other aspects of your application - research around to find these Universities.

  45. Hi
I will be moving to a different school this September to do my A-levels. I have already gained a place at my local boys grammar school, however I would like to gain a place at King Edward Grammar School, Chelmsford (4th in the country). KEGS do their admissions all on results day.
KEGS have told prospective students that 8a*s should get external students a place to do Chemistry. I am applying to take Chemistry Biology and Maths but am unsure on what to put as my fourth choice.
It is between Economics, History and PE.
The dilemma is that if I put Economics or History I have a lower chance of getting in as they are more subscribed subjects. However if I put down PE, I might be closing the door on good medical colleges as the subject is similar to Biology. I think I can get equally a high grade in all 3 as I enjoy them all and will get A*s at Gsce in these subjects.
So can you advise me on:
1- Will putting Economics or History actually lower my chances of getting in? As I have put down chemistry, which will require high grades as it is...
2- Will taking PE hinder my chances of getting in to a good medical school? I will be taking it as a full A-level if that matters
3- Which one should I pick?
Btw I am probably gonna get the 8 A*s they are asking for if that affects your advice.
    Massive Thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, History is one of the hardest A-Levels and therefore if I was in your shoes I would probably take History, because if you are certain that you will gain the required grades then it should not matter what you take and also Economics is a good A-Level indeed and goes well together with Maths, but however History I believe is much more high-regarded, because it is an essay writing subject, which some unis do prefer as it is a humanity and shows that you are an all-rounded individual. PE is not exactly a subject which a medical school will be keen on. Equally, if you are going to get those 8 A*s then it should not hinder your chances because you are still going to get those grades no matter what happens. Whatever happens happens and you can't change it. Think about it carefully and do whatever you feel is best for you; this is only my opinion which does not mean that you have to follow it. Good luck :)

    2. Thank you so much, great advice and a lot to think about! :)

    3. I would take History or Economics, if you look at my post on a-level requirements (http://youngwannabedoctor.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/level-requirements-for-medicine.html) you can see that quite a few Universities disregard Sports science (PE whatever) as a 3rd A-Level because of the similarities in content to a-level Biology.
I would then pick whichever subject you think you are more likely to get an A in, this is possibly the most important factor.
If you have specific Unis in mind which you would like to apply to, check out their admissions policies, some places (UCL for example) look favourably upon a "contrasting subject", then History would be a better bet.
      Good luck!

      Delete
  46. Okay, I did want to take PE only as a 4th A Level, as in my school we dont usually drop the 4th AS subject which would be in my case either pe, history and economics.
But thanks a lot for the advice, I'm going to look into a few unis and decide then,
    Thanks!

  49. Please could you address my post from the 16th July about being an international student. What difference does it make if I am an EU student resident in the UK for only the last 3 years?

  50. Right, I'm pretty sure I have done awfully in GCSE's, and I mean awfully, not like the people who think 5 A*'s is bad, I mean like, best I can have done is. A*AAABBCCDD. That is awful, but if I did really well, like A*A*Aa in AS/A2 in chemistry biology physics and maths, would i stand a chance at being able to do medicine, anybody answer please, I really need to know. I was thinking about the foundation courses and Nottingham and other places, where I would be perfectly qualified, as I meet the requirements and don't come from a wealthy family or go to a school known for its high academic achievement, but there are usually only about 10 spaces, so I cannot rely on that. Somebody please answer.

    1. Hello,
sorry but you mentioned that you have achieved 1 A* grade and 3 A grades, but yet you say that you are qualified for Nottingham university, which actually wants 6 A grades including the Sciences, Maths and English. I just don't understand how this is possible. Also, what subjects did you get the Ds in as that does matter as well? If I was in you position, I would not give up, but however have a back-up, because it is very unlikely for you to get in as the competition as you surely know is intense. There are a lot of good courses other than just medicine such as pharmacology and biomedical sciences. Maybe, you could enter medicine as a graduate student instead! I understand that you are not from a wealthy family and that you do not attend a high-achieving sixth form either, but you have to realise that there will be people with atleast 5 A*s even though they are in the same position as you and universities would want the brightest out of those. Good luck! :)

    2. I was referring to the foundation course at nottingham, there is a course that only requires CCC GCSE and CCC A levels, I am hoping to be able to get regular A-level grades required for medicine(A*AAA) or something, it is within my ability, I will just have to work hard. I was wondering, with those GCSE's and those A-level results, and my disadvantages would I still be able to do medicine. I know I would have much lower chances that most, but I was wondering if it is still possible for me. I know if I could resit my GCSE's I could get several A*'s, but medicine doesn't allow that. thanks for the reply by the way.

    3. And also the D's where in Music and DT. the A*(additional science)A(maths)AA(business studies)
and how do you go about entering medicine as a grad student, I always wondered if I don't do well in this way, are there other ways to get into medicine, I really would love to do a degree in Physics, but I really don't like the careers that come out of it, so if I where to get a degree in physics, could I then go on to medicine? and what would the requirements be?

  51. Hi, I got 2 A*s 5 As and 2 Bs (one of the Bs was in German where I got the highest in the class due to having an awful teacher)

I managed to get 2 high As in biology and chemistry january modules this year and I'm hoping my AS grades are up to sccratch.

I've gotten 2 general hospital work placements, an amazing work experience in the heart hospital where i got to watch lots of surgeries (its what im intereted in ad want to go into) as well as volunteering at brownies, volunteering at oxfam, being a grade 8 in drums and doing karate.

I've also tried reading medical related books.
I've worked really hard for the UKCAT so I'm hoping I do well in that.

Will my GCSES let me down? My school is considered 'deprived' with an average GCSE score of 5 Cs

  52. Would doing maths, biology, chemistry, physics and further maths for AS be favourable for medicine. If I find it to be too much work I am considering dropping further maths and doing biology, chemistry, maths and physics for A2. Is there any point in doing 4 A-levels and 5 AS???? Will it make it easier for me to get into medicine if I am able to get all A's. Should I drop physics too and do biology, chemistry and maths only for A2??? I am predicted 10 A* for my GCSE's, which unis should I apply to? I was considering imperial, UCL, Kings and Bristol/Southampton...

    1. Hello,
I believe you could apply to any universities listed above, but seriously doing further maths is not exactly going to help you and may even hinder your application to some universities. Why not do something that you enjoy? If you are seriously considering Kings then you should do something outside the box e.g. a humanity, because it shows that you are an all-rounded individual and that is what Kings prefer, too. Also, there is no need to do 5 AS as only 4 AS are required. Why not do an enrichment e.g. EPQ instead of doing the Physics unless you really want to. Good luck! :)

      Delete
    2. Hi,
I really enjoy maths which was my reason for choosing further maths. I was considering doing a humanities subject but I really don't enjoy them so I thought that I should choose what I enjoy which is the sciences and maths. Do you think doing a EPQ will be benefical? Will it be better than doing a physics a-level? How does an EPQ work? I know it's like a project but i'm not entirely sure how it works.

      Delete
    3. The thing is because some universities see Maths A-Level and Further Maths A-Level overlapping, they do not like it and often say "Maths and Further Maths would only be considered as one A level." This comes from UCL, which I know you are considering to apply to. Also, UCL says that they want contrasting A-Levels, which does not particularly mean humanities, but anything. Maybe, you should choose an essay-writing subject e.g. Psychology or English Literature, because it is very beneficial. The decision is up to you though and Further Maths is not too bad either, if you enjoy your Maths. Equally, the EPQ is very beneficial, because you spend 1 year on any project and write a 5,000 word essay and hold a 10 minute presentation to about 3 people. A lot of unis do prefer this as well and you just talk about any topic you are interested in e.g. stem cells. I would definitely consider it as it is very good to have on a personal statement. :)

      Delete
    4. oh right...so do you get any UCAS points for an EPQ? Is it equivalent to an AS?

      Delete
    5. It is a Level 3 course, but most universities do regard this as an AS Level and yes you do get UCAS points.
      70=A*
      60=A
      50=B
      40=C
      and so on...

      Delete
    6. I just found out that my college will be doing a Cambridge Pre-U in Global Perspectives. So I wil have 6 AS all together :) Do you know if unis count this qualification as an AS? Do you get UCAS points for it? I know its marked in scales like D1, D2, D3, M1 etc....

  53. Hi. I'll be applying as an international Students. I got the following grades in my GCSEs:
    1. English Language A*
    2. Mathematics A*
    3. Chemistry A*
    4. Pakistan Studies A*
    5. Biology A
    6. Physics A
    7. Urdu Language A
    8. Islamiat A
    9. Principle of Accounts A

Based on my A1, my predicted A levels grades that will be going through are:
    1. Chemistry A*
    2. Physics A*
    3. World History A*
    4. Biology A

In terms of work experience and charity. I have been working with 2 NGOs, one of which i started with a couple of friends. I've volunteered to teach underprivileged children at schools with limited resources and have conducted carious charity drives. I've also interned at two major hospitals in my country. Shodwoing doctors, assisting patients and receiving BLS orientation etc.
i am also the Captain of my College's Cross Country team and won an inter regional race last year. Furthermore, i will be serving as the Deputy Secretary General at my College's Model UN conference. I will be appearing for my UKCAT next month.

I realize my GCSE grades rule out the major UNIs. So i would appreciate it if you could suggest which unis i should apply to

  54. Do medical schools take into consideration the difficulty of the GCSEs taken? I have done Mandarin as my modern language, and I'm not a native speaker, so I'm extremely unlikely to get an A* in it ( although I'm predicted to get an A). Would this automatically put me below somebody who got an A* in eg Spanish, which is much easier?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I know that my results: 4A* 4A 1B are generally quite good grades but I gather they're not that great for medicine. What else would you suggest I do for my application and what universities could I apply, I'm quite confident I could get good A-levels in the sciences as I am much stronger there than elsewhere. Also, I am realistic and know I shouldn't apply for the top unis. Thanks

    1. Also, I go to a comprehensive state school and did the double science award as triple was not an option made available. If I had done triple I could have easily got 5 A*s in total as I got full marks in all my science Will they take any of this into account

7A* (English Lang, bio, chem, phys, maths, geog, re )
4A ( dt, English lit , stats, French)
    1B ( ict short course)

They are not brilliant for applying to medicine but could you advise me on where I can apply to realistically . I am about average for my school.

I would really want to get into Newcastle but I'm aware many applicants will have much better results than me. Where else shall I consider?

4 A*: Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics

I'm taking the 3 sciences and Maths for my A-levels. If I manage to get 4 A's at AS will that be enough?

I need help on what Universities I should apply too. Just finished my AS's and will send off my application soon.

    GCSEs: 6A* 4A
AS: AAAA in Chem, Bio, Maths, Econ (not dropping)
**I got 90 UMS for Maths and Econ, 92 for Chem and 93 for Bio, so I have heard this might determine whether I apply to Uni's that favour UMS**

    UKCAT:729
BMAT: Haven't done it. Should I?

I have done tons and tons of work experience and Volunteering at literally everywhere! Lol. So I have managed to make an interesting PS...

I want to know what the best unis I can apply to are. And what is the best combination of 4 uni's.

I would like to study medicine at a London uni to become a GP (preferably Imperial, UCL or King's). I am worried that my GCSE's will hold me back from receiving a place. Any feedback/advice from anyone will be most appreciated :)

    Maths A*
    Biology A*
    Chemistry A*
    Physics A*
    Additional Science A*
    History A*
    Polish A*

    maths igcse-a
    music-a
    french igcse - a*
    english language-a*
    english literature-a
    geography-a
    history-a*
will be resitting/remarking chemistry for the a* and remarking music for what is essentially a guaranteed a*.
so going to plan my grades will be 7a* 3a or at worst 5a* 5a. the general consensus i gather from the site so far is i should avoid rg unis, london unis, oxbridge etc. with 5a* 5a. will this be the case with 7a* 3a? assuming of course i obtain 95% ums across all modules of my as (chemistry, biology, maths, music) i hope that my gcses as they stand will not significantly hinder my chances of obtaining interviews/offers from cambridge/ucl/bristol?

  69. Hi,

I've wanted to do medicine for years and got these results last week:

4A* - Maths, Chemistry, Geography & Stats (taken a year early)
5As - Physics, Spanish, History, Welsh (one mark off A*, is it worth paying for a remark) and Biology (got all A* in exams, cw came back a B despite being graded A* so being taken up with teacher in Sept)
2Bs - English Lit and Lang
Credit in BTEC Sport, Merit in ICT, Welsh Bacc & Key Skills.
I was predicted 8A*s but circumstabces at home at the time meant this time was really hard and stressful.
As for experience, 5 years as firstaider at St Johns, over 300 hours of volunteering with them and a teaching qualification. Did work experience at a nursery as I'd love to go into peaeds. I'm planning on getting some hospital, GP & nursing home experience in this next year. I did Silver DofE and played for Wales in sport. I really wanted to go to Cardiff, UCAS says 5A*s but their website says 4-5 so do I have a chance? And primarily is it worth paying money to try and get my welsh up to my 5th A*. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

    1. very impressive, well done. definitely should get the remark as i went from 5a* 5a to 8a* 2a just through remarking alone, one of my marks improved by a whole 10 ums, although this was in music so i dont know how this will relate to welsh and how it was marked. in terms of extenuating circumstance, be vary weary about this as I suspect that universities do not actually take extraordinary circumstances into account. also, work very hard to improve your grades in english as those bs will considerably hinder your application

I am currently trying really hard so hopefully my A-levels are much much better than my GCSE's. I have done work experience at a Hospital for a week, where i observed patients and went into different wards including, daycare, Physiotherapy, Optometry and the maxillo-facial ward. 1. Hello

your grades are very good but I don't think those are good enough for medicine. I mean even though you have As in the core subjects most medical applicants will have at least a few A*s if not all A*s and universities only have your GCSE results as evidence of your academic ability and achieved AS Level grades. But maybe you could do a similar course e.g. Biomedical or Optometry. Good Luck!

    1. Hello,

First of all think positive I mean if you are an A Grade student than you are doing well, but maybe you just need to focus more on your English GCSE. I mean if you try your best than you should be able to get an A. I would advise you to read a lot of books and novels, which could help you with your controlled assessments and also when you look at magazines start thinking about the language sides of it. e.g. why is this in bold? why is there a headline. this will help you with your analysis exam if you have one. I did the aqa English language exam and if you need any help feel free to ask me.

      Good Luck!

    1. Hello,

first of all congrats on those predictions, which are very good. Medicine is one competitive career path and I am not sure 6 GCSEs are enough for this and a lot of universities take the best 8/9 GCSEs into account, which you are short of. There is a possibility of doing this during your A Levels, but you have to realise that A Levels are much much harder than GCSEs. People that got A*s at Science for GCSEs end up getting Es if they don't put extra workload into it and it is very very hard to get As at A Levels, too. You have to realise you'll be competing against people with 10 A*s at GCSE and have done 15 GCSEs at total. I'm not sure your grades are good enough for this, but maybe there is another possibility e.g. Biomedical or something else.

      Good Luck!

    2. hello,
thank you for your response :))
Yes,I know unfortunately these are not the best grades :( but Manchester, Liverpool and Peninsula's GCSE requirements are not that unreachable( their requirements doesn't ask for more than 6-7 A's) so I thought that with
4 A* , 3A GCSEs and AAAA a-level grades + plenty months of work experience next to a GP and a Dentist might will be enough to get in, well I hope. But if not I'm going to think an alternative course like biomedical as you suggested.
I'm gonna try and I'll see what gonna happen 1% chance is enough :D (fingers crossed)

  85. Hi, I know that this is a medicine forum/post so I expect that dentistry would be included? Anyway, I'm 14 and currently doing my GCSE's, the following results are what I am targeted got achieve by the end of Year 11:

On top of this I am hoping to get 2 weeks of practice in a GDP, 1 week at an Orthodontist, 3 Days in hospital Dentistry, 1 week community Dentistry.
Would this be ok to get into a dental school in the UK, I have been searching and seeing people with 6+A* and I am getting quite worried.

  88. Hello! I realise this is probably going to make me look like a fool compared with all the other high achieving GCSEers on here. I'm 21 and didn't continue with education after GCSE's due to certain circumstances. I was predicted A's but as I didn't really bother with the exams I came out with B's thanks to modular exam results and coursework being good (basically had I tried I probably would've achieved the predicted grades).

After a lot of time out of education I have now decided to return to ed and in particular to study medicine. I am due to start Alevels in Sep 2013. (Double Maths, Bio, Chem, Russian) and will do anything I possibly can to ensure I get A grades. So basically the drift I'm getting from this blog is that there's no point even trying to apply for med? Lol.

I understand that taking time out of education anyway would really affect my application anyway, but aside from that. Considering my predicted grades for GCSE if I was to resit GCSE's to gain the required grades would resists of GCSES be seen as a negative point? and Would they even know you have re-sit them? - Just out of curiosity.

I have seen options for Access to Med courses in specific colleges that seem easy to get onto and are only a year long, but are competitive, but it all really contradicts the whole 'need A*'s for GCSE' point this blog presents.. Is there any hope for me? lol.

I think to all the people reading this blog you need to defy the odds whatever your circumstances are, if medicine is what you REALLY want to study in life..There's got to be some way around it.. as long as you are prepared to do everything possible to achieve it. Just wish I had known this when I was 14!!

Great blog though, thank you for all the information and best of luck with studies everybody!!

  89. Hi Okay so I'm currently studying my A-levels at a very good private school (in my As year).. Although for Gcse I was at a very bad comprehensive state school.. My gcses were exceptional compared to everyone else but I don't know if they will be enough for medicine and it's really upseting me.. I don't care where I go for university I just really want to do medicine.. I got 3A*'s 5A's and 3B's..
    A* Drama
    A* Geography
    A* Art
    A Chemistry
    A Physics
    A Maths
    A Biology
    A Photography
    B German
    B English language
    B English Lit
If it helps my old school is bellow the 770 cut off for a-levels.. Although I don't study there now will this count for anything and where should I apply? I'm currently studying Chemistry, Physics, Maths, and Biology I'm aiming for AAAA but it might be more like AAAB because I'm really struggling to catch up having coming from my old school.... Please tell me is it worth applying for medicine next year????? :(((((

  102. Ok maybe refer to me as Moo from here on in just to ease confusion...
I want to apply for medicine at either Cambridge, Edinburgh, Imperial or UCL, I'm in Yr 11 and despite my predicted grades being 10 A*s I don't think I've achieved those. I think the worst possible grades I could have achieved would be:
    Art a*
    English lit a
    English Lang a
    French a
    History a
    Biology a*
    chem a*
    physics a*
    maths a*
    rs a*

With the best possibly being all A*s except in history...
Both my parents are doctors and I would love to go into the field too, but I am scared my gcse grades won't be good enough!

I have got work experience shadowing a doctor in a hospital for a week, working in a gp surgery and at an elderly care home.

The A levels I intend to do are chem bio maths and economics, do you think I can do it??
Thank you so much for your consideration,
    Moo

  103. 7A*s and 3As at GCSE. My heart is set on Edinburgh, Oxbridge and possibly Birmingham. Do I have a fighting chance or should I keep my mind open as I will be competing against those with much better results than mine. Am predicted 4As at AS and have done some work shadowing at a hospital and volunteered at a nursing home as well.

  104. Hello, I have just done my GCSEs and will be getting my results in the Summer. I was predicted all A* but did not do any revision so know I'm not going to get that. This is what I think I will get:-
    RE - A/A*
    Maths - A/A*
    ICT - A*
English - A already have B but resat the exam
    English lit - B/A
    History - A/A*
    Music - A/A*
    French - B/A
    Latin - B/A
    Biology - A/A*
    Physics - A
    Chemistry - A
    PE - A
Do you think these will be good enough for medicine? OR should I begin to think about another career?
I will have experience as I am starting work at a care home and am shadowing a doctor plus my mums an optician and Dads a Doctor so can get experience through them. Oh and I have an IQ of 141.
    Thankyou

  110. Hi there- thanks for all the information/advice- really helpful/reassuring!

    I've just started year 12, and have done work experience abroad, and plan on doing work experience at home next summer. However, I'm disappointed with my gcse results, and am really starting to doubt if medicine is now even an option. These are my GCSE's;

5 A*- Bio, Chem, Phy, Eng lang, History
4 A- Geo, IGCSE Maths, French, Eng Lit
    B- Latin.

I'm taking all 3 sciences and geography for a-level.

Please reply if possibly, I'm starting to worry if I need to start looking at other options.

    Thank you- Zoey x

DO the rest of the stuff to do with UKCAT and work experiance and you'll be fine, aim for high 90%+, its possible
