GCSE Results and University Requirements for Medicine

*UPDATED FOR 2012 ENTRY*
IF YOU ARE UNSURE IF YOU HAVE "GOOD" ENOUGH GCSE'S - SEE THIS POST: http://youngwannabedoctor.blogspot.com/2012/01/bad-gcse-results-and-getting-into.html

Well many 16 year olds (or possibly 15 year olds if you are one of the unlucky few born very late in August) will have recently received their GCSE results.
Mine are pretty damn good, YAY!!

However as this a blog about all things needed for getting into medical school, I'll give you guys a heads up about what you will have needed to get into different Medical Schools.

Okay so the best of the best require mainly A*'s, this includes Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Bristol (obviously others are good, they just haven't specified GCSE grades). However not everyone is pumping out straight A*'s and many Universities don't see them as a requirement, so I'll do it in alphabetical order.

Aberdeen = All A/B passes expected, especially in the Sciences. C passes in English and Maths. Biology and Physics as seperate subjects are looked upon favourably.
Barts = Minimum requirement of AAABBB in Maths, science and English.
Birmingham = At least 8 A*'s (notice the "at least" meaning your competition will probably have more than 8) This year (2011 entry) most of the applicants who received offers had 9/10 A*'s
Brighton and Sussex = High grades expected with B's in English and Maths, however candidates with low grades are considered if your AS's results are very good
Bristol = 5 subjects at grade A/A* including Maths, English and 2 sciences
Cambridge = lots of A*'s... need I say more? However if your AS UMS marks are exceptional, your GCSE grades matter less
Cardiff = A minimum of 9 grade B's. B's needed in English and Maths, AA needed in additional science, and AAB for separate sciences
Dundee = A good pass in Biology... I assume this too mean an A or above, Dundee is one of the top medical schools, so even though they don't specify on GCSE results, you can bet your competition will have a lot of A*'s
Durham = A minimum of 5 subjects at grade C, to include Maths, English and the sciences
East Anglia = 6 subjects with at least grade A including the core subjects (core subjects = English and Maths)
Edinburgh = 8-11 A*'s, with at least B's in core subjects (average applicant has 6 A*'s - the ones who get in have above 8 A*'s)
Glasgow = A's in English and the sciences
Hull York = At least 6 subjects at grade C, A's in the Maths and English, B's in the sciences
Imperial = AAABBB in Maths, English and the sciences
Keele = Grade A in a minimum of 4 subjects, and B's in English, Maths and the sciences
Kings College London = Grade B in English and Maths if not offered at AS/A2 level
Lancaster = A minimum of 9 GCSE's at grade C. Lancaster has a points based system, with A*/A = 2 and a B=1, you need at least 15 points - which essentially translates to AAAAAABBB. Maths, English and the sciences need to all be at grade B.
Leeds = B's in English, Maths and the sciences with a range of good grades, this presumably means nothing below a B and certainly no fail grades
Leicester = GCSE requirements are not specified but are "taken into consideration" - aim high
Liverpool = At least B's in the core subjects and sciences, and a scoring system. A*/A = 2 and B = 1, in this scoring system you need at least 15 points. Which works out as mainly A/B's in all subjects (AAAAAABBB)
Manchester = At least 7 subjects at grade C or above, at least 5 at A/A*. A minimum of B for English language. A minimum of grade C for Physics and Biology
Newcastle = A's in the sciences, and a minimum of 5 passes (I'm quite surprised by the relatively low grades, seeing as Newcastle is another good Medical school, so do expect most other applicants to have higher grades than this)
Nottingham = Grade A in the sciences and at least 6 subjects
Oxford = Minimum Grade A in the sciences, minimum 8A*'s
Peninsula = Grade C in at least 7 subjects
Queen's Belfast = Uses a point scoring system, 4 points for an A*, 3 for an A etc. Makes competition quite high because all GCSE results are taken into account in the final point adding
RFUCMS = B's in core subjects and from 2012 a language will be required
Sheffield = At least 6 A grades required and B's in core subjects
Southampton = Minimum of B in 7 subjects, including Maths, English and the sciences
St. Andrews = B's in core subjects and the sciences
St. Georges = Minimum of 8 subjects. A's in maths, English and the sciences. A B is needed for English language.
UCL = Minimum requirements are a B in English and Maths, and a modern foreign language for 2012 entry - however UCL uses GCSE's as an indicator of academic abilities, so most applicants will have a high percentage of A*'s

Anyway I hope everyone did great and that the above information is helpful rather than depressing!!

Good Luck with Sixth Form!

  2. This is really helpfull. I know that Leeds Uni has a extrenuating circumstance, with the gcse grades if your school falls behind 45%. As my comp produces 22% i think i fit into this bracket :) I know that when studying medicine they are all assesed by the GMC (General Medical Council) This meaning that no uni when studying medicine is better than another. There are different types of courses, like the PBL (Problem Based Learning) or the more academic courses like at Oxbridge where you dont have contact with a single patient untill your 3rd year ! :S So really when deciding, its not the rep of the uni that counts its the accomodation, night life etc

  6. I would really like to know what subjects I should take for my GCSE s to go into medicine, especially medicine because it is something i have an interest in. I'm predicting I would probably get a C or B in maths but all As in physics, chemistry, bio, geography, ict and art but maths is my weakness. Could you please, please tell me whether a C-B grade in maths for Gcse would be an entry into medical school?
    Thankyou,
p.s. i would also want to know what exact grades you need to get into a popular university.
At the moment I am only in year nine attending a private school , British International school. I will look forward to ur reply thanku!

  35. Hi, i'm going into year ten this year and really want to be a doctor. My school did a three year gcse course so i have already been working towards them for a year now. I'm doing triple science, Maths, English + english lit, Philosophy, French, History, Psychology, Music and food technology. Im predicted A*'s and A's in them but im worried i may have chosen some of the wrong things as i was younger than most when i chose them. What do you think? I havent done any volunteering yet either and am already 15, how old do you have to be to volunteer in a medical environment?
    thanks

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well as i have worked in many medical fields you required to work at the age of 16 however , your devotion can lead you to do anything. You can try re-arranging voluntary work in hospitals now if you are committed. Nothing is impossible as long as you have dedication, commitment and great loyalty.

  37. I am currently in year 11 at a state school. The school teaches AQA science and after recently receiving B,A*,B (retaking B's) in 1a(Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and A*, A*, A in 1b and getting an overall grade A in Core science I was wondering whether these scores would be high enough to get into a top university (along with extra-curricular, charity work + work experience)to study medicine. In my other subjects I am predicted majority A*'s and a couple of A's so I would quite like to know if anyone has any advice. Thanks

  38. I am currently studying in year 12 and just casually worrying about uni :|
I'm studying Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Mechanics and French..
I got an A* in maths at GCSE, and A in additional and an A in core science. Unfortunately, I got a C in English language. Would it be still possible for me to do medicine if I work extremely hard and get AAAA at AS Level?

    I'd really like your advice.
    Thanks

  39. I'm currently i yr 1. I got 8A and 2A*'s at GCSE and am taking physics, chemistry, biology and history As/A-levels, where I'm predicted all A's at As. I would love to go to a uni like Imperial or Nottingham, do you think i have a chance?

  41. I have currently started yr 10 and have gone to a private school all my life ( including primary) this is why I think that my predicted grades are terrible due to the exquisite background I'm from with both of my parents as doctors too!! i am predicted an A* and A in all my subjects, but english!! i have never been good in english and it's just one of those subjects that you keep trying but can't really revise. Unfortunately I am crossing between a high C and a low B. I really want to get into medical school,so are there any universities that would accpet me. On a further note, if I chose to re-take english, would universities look down on me, as I heard that they can now see how many times and whether a person has retaken any subjects.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is the same person as above btw. Do you know any good english tutors, as unfortunately, I have also moved schools this year and we are on a syllabus which only has 30% coursework, as opposed to 60% in my old school? And is there any particular extra curricular activities I should do, as at the moment I don't do many - I just take piano lessons, but would like to do more extra curricular activities. Can I do any work experience at 14? And finally( sorry ) is there any good websites or textbooks for building vocabulary and preparing you for GCSE english papers.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yes, I also have similar problems to that. I am only struggling with GCSE english language. I try and read books now and again, but don't really have much time anymore. Is there any other way, websites or tutors you would know of? I see there is a delay in replying to your last blog, so please could you reply ASAP, as there is not a lot of time until my exam. I release that I have left things too late, but I am desperate and every little counts.

  44. (Sorry, I put release when I meant realise)

  45. Alright so I see you're very popular. So to avoid confusion with others, I'm person D.

So basically I'm doing 13 GCSE's and I need some advice on A levels. The choices I'm considering are Biology, Chemistry, English Lit and Psychology. Now I know there are only two sciences, so would only doing two bar me from any universities? Also I hear Psychology isn't a good choice but it's something I'm interested in and I thought it would compliment Biology.

Oh and of course I'm aiming to do medicine. At Oxbridge if possible

  46. Wanna Be Doctor 2 :P5 December 2011 at 19:13

I applied to this sixth form college and I have noo idea what to choose since there are 3 types of AS Maths and there is no information on those different courses. I really want to become a Doctor, but I'm getting B's only although on my ICA i got an A. There is Maths (Mechanics), Maths (Statistics) and Further Mathematics, which one is required to become an eligible doctor? Or can you do any of those 3 types of Maths as long as you have a A Level Maths qualification? Pleaseeee reply x

  47. Hi I am in year 11 and at my school we started our GCSEs in year 9 so I already have 4a's in English, maths, core science and additional science, a b in English literature and 2 c's in French and art. I'm doing more subjects this year (including triple science) and a few others which I am predicted a/a*. Do you think the 2c's that I have will affect my chances of studying medicine? And when do you think is the best time to start some work experience?

  52. Hey, I went to a Grammar school for my GCSE's, but as I had moved into Year 10, that school had already started GCSE's in Year 9, and my year were in their last year of Gcse. They messed up my gcse's pretty bad; stopped teaching some subjects and i had to GCSE physics and some of history and french myself. In Core Sci i got A, Triple Sci ABB, English Lang A, Eng Lit A, Maths B, History B, French B, Business Studies B (cause they messed my coursework :( ), R.E Short Course A and I.C.T 2 A*s. I'm doing bio, chem, history and eng lit for AS Levels, but I was wondering if any uni's would consider me, with enough work exp & good AS grades & good UKCAT? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  53. hey i was wondering if i could still do medicine if ive only got 7A's 2B's and a D in spanish at GCSE's and predicted 4A's at AS. Also what would be the best uni's to apply to with these grades

    ReplyDelete
  54. I am hoping that I get A*/A* in Double Award Science, A* in Maths, at least a B in English Language and Literature, A/A In ICT, A In P.E, and a B in R.E. For my options, C In History, B In french and A In food Technology.

I'm hoping to go to Liverpool University to study Medicine.

I am taking Biology, Chemistry, Maths and History at A-Level.

Will these grades get me into Liverpool University.

    ( A*,A*,A*,A,A,A,A,B,B,B,B,C)

  55. When i was younger i got involved with a bad group of people and only recently have been motivated to achieve very high grades. Ive heard that a very high UKCAT can help is that true? Ive been practising some tests and ive been getting around 730 is that good?

  56. Hi there.
I just got an A* in English, woo! But I'd just like to check if you think my other grades/predicted grades are going to be okay.
    Already achieved -
    A* English
    B Spanish
    A Ex Arts
    Distinction Business Studies BTEC
    Predicted -
    A* Chemistry
    A/A* Physics
    A Biology
    2 x A Maths (I'm doing the pilot)
    A Product Design
    Distinction Level 3 Business
    Merit Level 3 performing Arts

So it looks likely that I'm going to leave with 3A*s 3As 1B and some equivalents that the universities won't put much weight on. Is that really good enough?
Also, at A/S I'm doing Biology, Chemistry, English Language and either Physics or History, which one would be best?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Okay, thanks.
I'm not taking History, no. But my local college have said that considering my English Lang grade is quite high, I should be able to catch up with everyone else. Thanks for the link!

Sorry to be nosey but its been 2 years since this was written, so you must be doing A2s now? Have you got any offers?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh dear, sorry to keep spamming you with posts.

Is it worth doing the extended project? I'm in a state school and the grades I've written above aren't amazing, but I should still apply I think. Would a strong, medically related, extended project put me in a better position, along with extra voluntary work and my work experience, of course.

I'll leave you alone after this, haha!

    so thats( A,A,A,A,A,A,A,A,B,B,B,B,B),

but i am also dyslexic but will uni's not consider this i mean i work pretty damn hard just to achieve a 'decent' grade, all my B's in sbjcts have struggeled with them because of my dyslexia, will medichal schools not consider this :(?

  67. Hello There, I was just wondering...
I go to a private school which is a totally messed up school with only 29% A*-C Pass rates, I'm diligently working towards securing A* but however I'm doing all these exams by a linear exam format introduced by the government recently and I'm afraid it'll affect these grades....
    I'm predicted (A*,A*,A*,A,A,A,A,A,B)
Would Birmingham consider me as a possible student??
    Reply soon :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. March 19th: I'm afraid Birmingham wouldn't consider you, you need at least 8 A*'s for an interview, I'm sorry about that.

    ReplyDelete
  69. March 17th: I think it depends on how severe your dyslexia is; unfortunately if it is severe enough to count as extenuating circumstances, the school should have already put in measures in to help you (extra time, laptop etc) so therefore your performance shouldnt have been impeeded? If that makes sense, because you have advantages other students don't. If you think it has affected your grades Then definately mention it on your personal statement.
I do know medics with dyslexia but they've all achieved the same grades as everyone else. Im sorry I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear, BUT I'm sure if the rest of your application is very good then you will get interviews, just apply very wisely!!

  71. 19th March= Either would be fine to be honest, do whichever you can get the best grades in.
GCSE's are more about the grades than the subjects for Universities, and you are already taking a MFL so that ensures you can apply to all places (i.e. UCL which I think now request it.

  72. This worries me alot ive only got 4 A*'s but 8 A's and i feel like an idiot. I want to be a doctor but decided late an im going to have to apply later this year so need lots of experience. Where would u recommend applying to as ive heard there is still so much competition in the bad universities. Can all A's and above back up a only 33% A*'s in universities like oxford and cambridge, i got 6 A*'s 3 A's 3 B's and a C in the mock and i fell like they were better than what i actually got. The problem is that in the real exams just a few modules let me down in each subject like in latin 3 a*'S and a B but only an A overall and in business studies 2 A*'s and a B and an A overal,l also was was 1 ums off in chemistry. Im taking spanish maths biology and chemistry this year and just hoping for the best. One last thing how do universities view grammar schools in respect to gcse grades

  75. I am just about to do my gcses this summer and have been predicted 7/8 a*s but am slightly worried the very top unis will ask for more than this, and i will only have 10 full gcses overall and two short courses so i guess what im asking is will this be enough?!
(I'm taking bio chem geog english and critical thinking at a level, but was also wondering if psychology was still viewed as "soft" by many top unis?) thanks

    1. Do you go to a private school or a comprehensive?

      7/8 A*'s and 3/4 A's I'm assuming?
Short courses only count as half a GCSE.
So you are doing 11 GCSE's in total.

If by top Unis you mean Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh and Birmingham - no you would probably not be okay for these Universities - many other applications will have 11/10 A*'s.
Psychology isn't really considered "soft" but you should definitely get an A in it. At Birmingham, it is required that you get all A's at AS if you doing Psychology.
The A-Levels you are taking sound good, but remember that Critical Thinking isn't considered by many Unis as a subject :)

      Good luck!

  87. Hi

    My GCSE grades are atrocious, I got 1 A 2Bs and 4Cs...

I know it goes against all rational, to honestly believe that I 'will' get into medicine, but I had circumstances(3 years of undiognosed Bi-Polar), which greatly affected my education and life.

I am predicted to get A*AAA with the A* in chemistry at AS-level, and I have over 45 hours of voluntary and work experience time.

My Ardour and passion for medicine greatly exceeds my 'setbacks' and I still believe that I can do it.

I Understand that what you say, by no way represents what A med school might think (no offence) but perhaps you can give me some advice?

I'm laughing right now at just how pathetic I sound, but I'm just so worried.

    Please do reply

    Jonathan

PS: Congrats on med school acceptance, you must be chuffed. which one are you going to?

They have said to me that they do not give preferences to those with higher grades.I was wondering would I need to do something else to beat the competition of getting into this medical school?
Such as work experience or how much you want to be a Doctor?

I am really worried that even if I do meet or exceed their requirements at AS I wont even be looked at just because of 13 stupid marks (which separated me from a B). Is there ANYTHING at all i can do about it which would still allow me to be considered while still entering medical school by september 2013?

    3. dont know why you would be worried, only people who dont get an A* should be worried tbh. There are many people who apply with hardly any A*s but still get in. GCSEs is 1/6 of your application ( A levels, personal statement, reference, BMAT/UKCAT) so you should be more worried how you do at A level

I need help on what Universities I should apply too. Just finished my AS's and will send off my application soon.

    GCSEs: 6A* 4A
AS: AAAA in Chem, Bio, Maths, Econ (not dropping)
**I got 90 UMS for Maths and Econ, 92 for Chem and 93 for Bio, so I have heard this might determine whether I apply to Uni's that favour UMS**

    UKCAT:720
BMAT: Haven't done it. Should I?

I have done tons and tons of work experience and Volunteering at literally everywhere! Lol. So I have managed to make an interesting PS...

I want to know what the best unis I can apply to are. And what is the best combination of 4 uni's.

After that i am hoping to attend a university, which has a good rating.I suppose i will leave the university until a later date, due to the fact that that is at least 4 to 5 years away... a reply would be much appreciated.

A lot more things matter in your application then just your GCSE's - UKAT, experience, personal statement

I'm considering re-taking as a private candidate; however, my teacher is warning me if I retake both subjects ( 6 papers ) it may jeopardize my other GCSE results which I will be doing simultaneously in the summer ( including physics. This makes 9 science papers! ) I'm afraid all the exam pressure will overwhelm me and I'll fail them all, but I'm really determined to change those B's.

Instead, use them to your advantage (for example, make use of them for extra help/tuition). Bon chance!

  131. Hi,
I am 16 and my GCSEs were disappointing I got 5 As and 5 Bs.
My As were in Chemistry, Biology, Maths, English and Geography.
I have always wanted to go into medicine and applied for 6th form to take A'Level Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Pschology. I went to my target setting day today and my tutor asked what I wanted to do and obviously I said medicine and he said my results were not good enough to go into this field. I was in tears, surely my A levels will play some part in all of this. Can my disappointing GCSEs ruin everything? What do you all think. I almost feel there is no point in continuing down this road.

    1. You have probably already decided what you're doing but for anyone else in a similar position to you....I would try really hard in a-levels and go for it! if you don't get in but are really passionate for medicine then try graduate entry. Just keep in mind there are students who have lots more A*'s so don't expect to accepted without working for it.

    2. Also, don't apply to any places where you haven't met the requirements. Make sure you check properly for where you qualify!

    3. Thats crazy there wrong you can do it its just that they carnt , be cause you can get a 2.1 in biomedical degree bsc hons then do medicine degree undergraduate at a different uni they wont look at gcses except english and maths because to a degree it is pointless .

  135. In GCSE, Is it absolutely necessary to take all three sciences (biology, chemistry, physics) in order to apply for medicine? Will it be possible if taking two sciences (biology and chemistry) in GCSE? I need to make GCSE choices soon, please help as soon as possible. Many thanks in advance!

    1. Yes it's okay to not have physics as long as you definitely are going to get a good maths grade. Maths or physics are required
